Intellectual Property Rights Workshop at Universitas Islam Riau (UIR)

The Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Center of Universitas Islam Riau (UIR) held a Patent Workshop themed “Through Workshops, We Increase the Number of Patents in 2026,” held on the 4th floor of the UIR Rectorate Building on Thursday (05/08/2025).

This activity is part of the IPR Center’s strategic program as outlined in the 2025 Annual Work Plan.

The Head of the UIR IPR Center, Dr. Zulfikri, S.H., M.H., M.M., explained that the event aims to enhance the understanding and capabilities of inventors regarding the patent registration process. To date, many inventors have faced various obstacles, such as a lack of technical understanding in drafting patent documents, limited funding, and a lack of assistance during the registration and application status monitoring process.

“The main issues we encounter are a lack of IPR literacy among lecturers and researchers, as well as technical confusion in writing patent documents. To address this, the UIR IPR Center is committed to providing ongoing assistance and training,” said Dr. Zulfikri.

As a demonstration of their commitment to finding solutions, the IPR Center invited three keynote speakers who are professors and experts in the field of IPR:

  1. Prof. Dr. rer.pol. H. Syafrinaldi, S.H., M.C.L. (UIR’s Rector )

  2. Prof. Dr. Heri Purnomo Basuki, M.Sc. (Chairman of the Board of IPR Management, Journals, and Publishing at Airlangga University)

  3. Prof. Dr. Monita Olivia, M.Sc. (Professor of Chemical Engineering at Riau University and former manager of the UR IPR Center)

The workshop was attended by UIR inventors currently in the patent registration process, as well as scientific journal managers within the university. The sessions covered not only the technicalities of patent registration but also strategies to improve journal quality toward national (SINTA) and international (Scopus) accreditation.

Through this initiative, UIR expects a significant increase in patent applications and the development of a stronger, more innovative academic ecosystem in the fields of research and scientific publication. (hms/smh/rls)
